Until the Irish built their new stadium in 1930, their "home" games against Southern Cal were played in Chicago's Soldier Field, itself only a year old at the time of this game. Nearly 100,000 ticketholders and 20,000 gatecrashers attended this fiercely fought contest, making it a crowd that remains the largest in the history of college football.
