About Us
Resurrecting the colorful artwork that graced the covers of early 20th Century college football programs was the idea of Andy Moursund, a former Washington area book shop owner who is one of the two founders of this website.
In addition to books, one of Andy's lifelong interests has been sports, and particularly the historical imagery associated with it. From the time he was a small boy, he tortured his mother (as he now vexes his wife) by saving the program from every game he attended. He later added programs from major sporting events ranging from early 20th century World Series programs to the heavyweight championship fights of Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis. His guiding principles for acquisition were the quality of the cover artwork and the historical significance of the contest, ideally in combination.
From his collection of images, he naturally had many favorites, but what always seemed to jump out was the artwork on the college football game day programs from the early-to-mid-20th Century. No sport has a greater American heritage, and no sport produced finer examples of illustration. With first the advent of syndicated artwork and then the increasing takeover by photography, the sort of illustrations you will see on this website have become a lost art. But rather than lamenting that melancholy fact, Andy saw a vacuum that he was determined to fill.
Recently, Andy was introduced to Michael Geraghty, a nationally recognized artist from nearby Maryland. He discovered that Mike had his own collection of cover artwork from vintage American sports magazines, and if anything an even greater interest and knowledge in the history of college football than he had himself. Mike also had the contacts to help a greenhorn like Andy maneuver his way through the complex field of collegiate licensing. And out of this shared passion HistoricFootballPosters.com was formed.
For over six years, with painstaking effort and accuracy, we have remastered every single image you see here to its original look and coloration, and have also added the historical facts behind each game. We hope you enjoy the fruit of our efforts.
We appreciate your interest and patronage. All transactions come with our unconditional guarantee of your satisfaction. We are our own worst critics, and we won't be satisfied with our work unless you are.
