"Outlined against a blue, gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." Thus wrote Grantland Rice in The New York Herald Tribune the day after the soon-to-be-immortalized quartet swept through the Army team like "a cyclone." A few days later, a genius in the Notre Dame publicity department had the backfield quartet pose on horseback, and the resulting photograph, reprinted throughout the nation, cemented both the nickname and the legend forever.
