Ever since the senior year of the fabled Four Horsemen, the Irish had stood above the bowl fray, being content to whip up on the Big Boys during the regular season. But when Ara Parseghian's revived program thrust the Blue and Gold into the national spotlight once again, the powers that be in South Bend finally relented and the "subway alumni" around the country got their wish. In this game they were nipped by national champion Texas, but the next year they got their revenge, and after that it was off to the races.
