The Pacific Coast Conference that year had three dominant powerhouses, and these two were right up there. Cal hadn't been beaten since 1919 (a season ending loss to the Huskies), while Washington had rolled through its first seven games with a combined score of 238 to 17. Something had to give, but it didn't---and Stanford wound up going to the Rose Bowl. The Golden Bears consoled themselves by inviting Penn out to Berkeley for a competing New Year's Day "bowl" game, and sending them back to Philly with claw marks all over their uniforms.
