After the assassination of President Kennedy on the afternoon of Friday, November 22nd, nearly all of the major college football games scheduled for that weekend were either postponed or cancelled altogether. Nebraska and Oklahoma's Big Eight Championship showdown was one of the few that went on as scheduled.

Although few were really in the mood to play or watch this game, it nevertheless went on, and with a 29 to 20 win the Cornhuskers won a ticket to the Orange Bowl, where they were to beat # 5 ranked Auburn and wrap up their best season since 1915.
