For the second time in three years, the Spartans found themselves in Pasadena on New Year's Day, matched up against a great Red Sanders UCLA team. This one came down to the final minute, but then a penalty set the Bruins back to their one yard line, and with the Spartans in possession with seven seconds to go, fullback Gerry Planutis kicked a 41-yard field goal to give MSU the win. At least that's what the stadium announcer said---but in the dressing room it was discovered that the kicker was actually an unheralded end named Dave Kaiser, who until that point was giving new meaning to the word "unheralded." But at least the newspapers got it right.
