In a thrilling Orange Bowl battle of unbeaten 1950 teams, the Tigers' Sterling Smith pinned Miami's Frank Smith in the end zone for a 4th quarter safety, and those two points enabled the Clemson eleven to nip the hometown Hurricanes by 15 to 14 in one of the best New Year's Day games ever played. The win gave Frank Howard's Tigers their second unbeaten team in just three seasons.
